Flying Unicorn October KOM available now!

Summer has bid her farewell and the morning air is crisp as the leaves turn from greens to golds.
These are the days where weekend mornings are driving down the country lane and stopping at the Farmer's market for some apple cider as the children frolic in the pumpkin patches and tug asking if they to can have a hayride. With the Solace of Fall Flying Unicorn is proud to present to you our October Kit of the month Farmer's Market and Hayrides.

The summer-flower has run to seed,
And yellow is the woodland bough;
And every leaf of bush and weed
Is tipt with autumn’s pencil now.

And I do love the varied hue,
And I do love the browning plain;
And I do love each scene to view,
That’s mark’d with beauties of her reign.

Fabscraps and Websters at the Flying Unicorn!

I just love this time of year with all the new summer releases hitting the market! Today I have two layouts to share with you, both done with recent releases.

First up is the luscious Fabscraps Shabbylicious collection.  I love the soft pinks, greens, and blues of this paper!

This page is dedicated to the memory of our sweet Chena who many of you may know from the stories of Escape Kitty and Chena wandering the world together.  We lost Chena very tragically three weeks ago to gastric torsion.  It was so sudden and with her age at 12 1/2 and recent bout with pneumonia, we decided that it was too risky and the recovery too difficult, to put her through the surgery required to untwist the stomach, and so we said good bye to her.  Kitty's Mom, Jen, and 5 other of my scrapping buddies had just arrived for our annual scrap retreat at our home, it was definitely a horrible way to start the weekend but having them here helped us get through those first difficult days.

On a happier note, we have a lovely new standard poodle puppy, Tisha, and she is helping Nika and my husband and I smile again.  Stay tuned for lots of puppy layouts!

This is my favorite photo of Chena, it really captures the mischievious light in her eyes and the little girl look that always made me laugh.  I miss you sweet girl.

CSI case file 91.

The Flying Unicorn is a permanent sponsor at CSI and this month we are the main sponsor and the creative team is
 participating as guest detectives.

I used 13 Arts paper from the September Flying Unicorn KOM for the base of my page.  Then I used a Mr Huey triangles mask that came in the kit to mask on the background.  A lot of paint dabbled here and there allowed me to incorporate all the colors in the challenge.  I had a lot of fun with this challenge, that's for sure!!

The photo is from our summer 2010 trip to Alaska and is in front of the campground where we hosted for 6 weeks.

The evidence:  wet medium - paint, molding paste, mist
Metal accents - Flying Unicorn butterflies

Testimony (journaling):
Suprise!  We always talked about camp hosting at Denali.  We were shocked that there was no camphost  at Teklanika when we camped there.  We tracked down a Ranger to find out why.  Then we asked for the job, and much to our suprise they gave us the job!  It was 6 weeks of heaven living in God's country, no phone, no internet, no electricity, and no TV.  It was just us, our campers and lots of wildlife!

Supplies:

Patterned paper:  13 Arts Faces of Spring -  Natural Beauty (Sept KOM)
Diecuts and punches: Melissa Frances Die Cut Accents (Sept KOM)
Flowers:    Petaloo Mixed Textured Blossoms teal and amber, Mixed textured mini blossoms amber
Ink:  Distress Black soot
Masks:  Mr Huey Triangles  (Sept KOM)
Paint:      Claudia Hellmuth classic teal, black, altered orange, yellow pastel,
Other:  Glitz Peek-A-Boos Love You Madly (Sept KOM); FUL Metal Adornments, Kaisercraft stamps (Sept KOM)

I hope you give this challenge a whirl, it was great fun!

I used the gorgeous Natural collection for my layout and tag.  This collection has such gorgeous colors, it was perfect for my nature photos  of a trio of Dall sheep that I took at Denali National Park in Alaska.

Here's my journaling:

Over the 5 years that we lived in Alaska we made many trips into Denali National Park and only once did we get "up close and personal" with Dall sheep.  Typically you only see them high up in the hills and on the ridges.

However, the summer that we campground hosted was such a treat and one of our favorite memories was the day we saw a "posse" of male Dall sheep just hanging out at Polychrome Pass. We often saw them on our weekly trips to the Toklat ranger camp at mile 53, but on one particular day we rounded a bend and saw these three young males walking down the center of the road, and they weren't moving either!  We immediately dubbed them the Bad Boys of Denali!  Well pulled over to what little shoulder there was and just watched them.  One particularly curious fellow came within 8 inches of my window!  I love this shot with his tongue sticking out!!

Supplies:
Patterned paper:  Authentique Natural collection, Stripe - Day Dream, Base - Native, journal card - Enhancements, floral - Beaming
Letters:  Pink Paislee  Meringue foam letters
Flowers:    Petaloo vines, Prima Wishes Dreams 970826; Prima Hello Pastel white flowrs
Ink:  Distress Pumice Stone
Masks:  Prima Crackle, 564247, TCW361 Tiny Circles
Paint:      Viva 3D Stamp Paint gold, metallic lime green
Other:  Kaisercraft leaf stamp, Claudia Hellmuth Studio Foam Stamps

Here's a tag I made also using Authentique's Natural Collection.  I used Prima's static stencil and Studio 490 gold embossing paste.  The flowers are Petaloo and Alda made the bird from air dry clay and I painted it with iridescent watercolor paints.

Now be sure to stop by Authentique's blog and  Flying Unicorn forum, and Facebook page to see the rest of the teams' work and maybe you will win a prize!

Steampunk Spells witch's dress and hat!

I've got a thing for these Kaisercraft mannequins; this is the 3rd one I've altered.  They are around 17" tall and so fun to dress.  You can get the dressforms at the Flying Unicorn store as well as G45's Steampunk Spells and many of their other lines too.

Aside from loving these dressforms, I am also loving G45's Steampunk Spells! Since Halloween is around the corner, I thought it would be fun to make a witch's dress and hat.  I dyed cheesecloth with Lindy's mists to make the wispy ragged part of the skirt.  The raven on her shoulder is from Dusty Attic.  The rosettes on her skirt are the same lace on the bodice, just cut apart and glued to the skirt. She has a boa made from a bloomers like product.   Black pearls, metal trinkets and G45 chipboard tags complete the look.

Her hat is made from G45 Steampunk Spells paper and embellished with Prima wood gears, Lyric flowers, G45 Steampunk Spells chippies, G45 metal flowers, Jolee's spiders, a bat that I stamped and fussy cut and fibers from Hobby Lobby.  Then I stretched some cheesecloth here and there to make it kind of messy looking.

Thanks for visiting!!

Mojo Monday sketch at the Flying Unicorn

It's Mojo Monday and like every Monday, the Flying Unicorn Forum has a new sketch challenge to help you get your mojo flowing!  This great sketch was designed by Tammy Henderson and is a great play on circles!

This sketch is so gorgeous, I just decided to follow it closely.   I used Bo Bunny's The Avenues collection papers; they are perfect for vintage styling!  First I did some masking with Prima's new Bubbles stencil and then I sprayed the page in random spots with Lindy's Glory of the Seas Gold.  I used a an 8" Wilton doily in the back and then cute several sizes of circles, 5" and 6", that I then punched around using two different Martha Stewart corner punches.  I also sprayed a 6" Wilton doily with Lindy's Glory of the Seas Gold.  I took one of my 6" circles and cut out the center leaving only the punched edge and adhered that to the 6" doily to create a frame effect.

I added Dusty Attic chicken wire heat embossed with Stampendous aged gold embossing enamel and then completed my look with the fabulous new amber Petaloo Textured Elements flowers and Mini Blossoms.  I can't tell you how much I love these flowers, I ordered them in every color!  Underneath the flowers I used some Flying Unicorn Adornments as leaves.

Since photographing this, I added some journaling to the War Bonds tag, it says:
Mom at the Roll of Honor, she purchased bonds dedicated to Dad during WW II.  Sign says, "Names on the Roll of Honor represent War Bonds purchased by friends and relatives and dedicated to their loved ones in the service."
